Presently, we offer full certification programs in Barbering, Cosmetology, and Instructing. All applicants for the Instructor program must have a current Barbering or Cosmetology License. Additionally, the state of Virginia certifying agency (SCHEV) requires two years licensed in the industry to become an employed Instructor at a certified institution.

Once your formal education for your chosen profession is completed and you've received your license, you are ready for employment! When you have secured a position, you must be ready to meet the requirements of your employer whether you are full time, part time, or independent contract employee. Regardless of the terms of your employment, you must follow the guidelines set forth by and comply with the business management.
There are certain physical requirements that should be considered when seeking a career in Barbering or Cosmetology. Barbers and Hairstylists are on their feet the majority of the day servicing clients. Be aware of the potential for injury and wear and tear on your body and learn the proper techniques to ensure a long lasting successful career free of injury, fatigue or permanent disability.
Professionals in the Barber and Cosmetology industry must comply with regulatory oversight entities in order to maintain safe and sanitary work habits and environments and uphold the standards for professionalism. The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations (DPOR), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over see professionals. Our academy also falls under the supervision of DPOR, SCHEV, NACCAS and once accredited, the Department of Education (DOE).
It is recommended you, the applicant (or your parent/guardian if minor) download and read the full Administrative Code of Virginia in its entirety. The following are highlights: The State of Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) through the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology, "the Board", requires through their Administrative Code Statute 54.1-703 all persons engaging in barbering, cosmetology, nail care, waxing, tattooing, body-piercing, or esthetics must have a valid associated license issued by the Board. Statute 18VAC41-20-20, General Requirements for a Barber, Cosmetologist, or Nail Technician: Part II. A. In order to receive a license as a barber, cosmetologist, or nail technician, an applicant must meet certain qualifications: Part 4. Must disclose any criminal convictions. THE BOARD MAY DENY LICENSURE TO AN APPLICANT based on convictions. Please see details of risks with convictions. 5. Must pass both sections of the licensing exam. B. Jazz Barber & Hairstyling Academy does not offer distance learning as a normal delivery of instruction, however, COVID19 has called on everyone to make adjustments to the normal way of life. With the approval of DPOR, SCHEV and NACCAS, in the event of a situation preventing attendance and instruction in person, distance learning is the option. Students will be required to have access to a computer and internet to participate in Zoom classes. Practical instruction for Barbering and Cosmetology cannot be offered due to basic safety concerns. Instructor students may participate in Zoom instruction as part of their practical assessments.
