Applicants for Barbering and Cosmetology must be 16 years of age and possess either a High School Diploma, or a GED at time of enrollment.
Applicants for the Instructor Program must hold a valid, active license in Barbering or Cosmetology.
All applicants or interested parties are entitled to a copy of our policies, procedures, and performance standings of our Academy prior to enrollment. Presently, we offer full certification programs in Barbering, Cosmetology, and Instructing. All applicants for the Instructor program must have a current Barbering or Cosmetology License. Additionally, the state of Virginia certifying agency (SCHEV) requires two years licensed in the industry to become an employed Instructor at a certified institution.

Professionals in the Barber and Cosmetology industry must comply with regulatory oversight entities in order to maintain safe and sanitary work habits and environments and uphold the standards for professionalism. The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations (DPOR), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversee professionals. Our Academy also falls under the supervision of DPOR, SCHEV, NACCAS, and, once accredited, the Department of Education.
It is recommended you, the applicant (or your parent/guardian if minor), download and read the full Administrative Code of Virginia in its entirety. The following are highlights: The State of Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) through the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology, "the Board," requires through their Administrative Code Statute 54.1-703 all persons engaging in barbering, cosmetology, nail care, waxing, tattooing, body-piercing, or esthetics must have a valid associated license issued by the Board. Statute 18VAC41-20-20, General Requirements for a Barber, Cosmetologist, or Nail Technician: Part II. A. In order to receive a license as a barber, cosmetologist, or nail technician, an applicant must meet certain qualifications: Part 4. Must disclose any criminal convictions. THE BOARD MAY DENY LICENSURE TO AN APPLICANT based on convictions. Please see details of risks with convictions. 5. Must pass both sections of the licensing exam. B.
